National Coming Out Day Support List

Show your support for Adelphi’s LGBTQ Community.

The Adelphi University community is committed to promoting diversity by creating a campus climate that is welcoming for all students, staff, faculty and administrators.

We write now to invite you to help support Adelphi University’s goal of being an inclusive and socially just community. One area of diversity is the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) community.

Our University has created several programs and initiatives in order to support the LGBTQ community on campus including the establishment of the AU LGBTQ and Allies Committee in 2011. The university has also hosted Safe Zone training for over 300 individuals who have committed themselves as allies of the LGBTQ community. We believe that each of these initiatives has been a tangible sign of the university’s support of the LGBTQ people and their allies.

Each year on October 11, National Coming Out Day is celebrated at colleges and universities across the country, including here at Adelphi. This day is a day not only for LGBTQ individuals to come out if they choose, but also a day for allies to publicly declare their support for members of the LGBTQ community. On campus, we host a variety of events in celebration of this day including our annual National Coming Out Day Vigil and annual Coming Out Stories Panel.

In anticipation of National Coming Out Day 2017, we are seeking your help in creating another tangible sign of the university’s commitment to creating a welcoming climate for all members of our community. We ask that you consider adding your name to a list of LGBTQ allies and supporters that will be published throughout the university community.

Signing such a list is a pledge to provide an open mind and a supportive atmosphere for LGBTQ students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Adding your name does not mean that you are LGBTQ, but rather that you are a friend and ally of the LGBTQ community on campus. This list will be particularly important for members of the LGBTQ community in helping them feel safe and supported on campus. In addition, the support demonstrated on this list could help new and continuing Adelphi students, staff, faculty and administrators make the decision to come to or stay at Adelphi.
